Dog Island Rum

Review by Eric Tansey, CSW, Sommelier

The Dog Island Rum has a dark caramel color with very sweet cigar box aromas, followed by cinnamon spice, candy apple, and vanilla extract. On the palate the rum has a medium body mouthfeel bordering on a heavier, syrupy mouthfeel but not going quite that far. It coats the tongue and cheeks and sticks well after you have finished your sip.

On the front of the palate, the Dog Island Rum delivers sweetness and spice. Candy apple and spicy cinnamon coat the palate. More subtle notes of cigar box and caramel join the mix on the mid palate. The finish brings loads of vanilla bean and ripe banana. The finish is hot, and if you are not mixing the rum with anything I do suggest an ice cube.

The Dog Island Rum is chock full of flavor. So much so that I decided to create a recipe just for pairing with this rum straight up over ice. Great sipping rum or mixing rum, and definitely a rum that is worth seeking out if you are near Orlando, Florida. Cheers!

From the Distillery

Borne out of a collaboration with local brewers, this savory rum delivers a parade of flavor qualities that endear it to aficionados everywhere. The Dog Island Beer Barrel Aged Rum is our traditional silver rum aged in barrels which were first used to age red ale and bourbon. What results is a spirit that erupts first with a traditional floral body followed by coffee and chocolate notes.
