Eroica Riesling by Dr. Loosen and Chateau St. Michelle

Review by Eric Tansey, CSW, Sommelier                                                                                                                                          The Eroica Riesling has powerful aromas of that classic “pool toy” or fresh garden hose characteristic so often found in great riesling, followed by subtle white peaches and orange peel. Just close your eyes and think about blowing up you children’s pool floats and you will see what this classic petrol quality is all about. That means this wine must be meant for summer!

On the palate the wine is like a wild curve ball thrown by Clayton Kershaw. Its delivery comes hard, right at your face with a white peach sweetness but then brakes over the plate bringing rubber tire and a burst of lemony acidity that checks your swing or gives you the green light to rip it down the third base line. The finish is dry and brings a perfect balance of mineral and wet stone that is cleansing and refreshing.

What an absolute treat this was and I had many laughs describing this wine blindly. These are the wines that I am most exited to find, wine that brings absolute thunder, regardless of label, brand, or any other bias you might have… It’s just solid, good, and joyful juice and it happens to be under $20 a bottle. Cheers!

The wine gets even more cool points!

Launched in 1999, Eroica is a labor of love for two of the world’s great Riesling producers. One from the Old World, the Dr. Loosen estate of Germany, and the other from the New World, Chateau Ste. Michelle of Washington state. An intermingling of Old and New World philosophies and techniques enables the crafting of an extraordinary Riesling from Washington state grapes. Named for Beethoven’s Third Symphony, Eroica reflects not only its variety and site, but also its heritage: bold and forward from its Washington roots, elegant and refined from German inspiration. https://www.ste-michelle.com/our-wines/tiers/eroica
