Spindrift Pinot Noir
Review by Eric Tansey, CSW, Sommelier The Spindrift Pinot Noir has a dark plum color with a medium stain. The Spindrift Pinot Noir is pretty dark for a typical Pinot Noir. Powerful aromas of cranberry, mulled wine-like spices, and subtle cotton candy peaking through.
On the palate, the Spindrift Pinot Noir has a medium body mouth feel with big, fruit driven characteristics. Cranberry and black cherry, with zippy acidity that cuts through the fruitiness.
Very well played Pinot Noir that is a bit of a fruit bomb but not an oak monster, leaving it to be a bit more classy and elegant. The finish is lengthy with oaky vanilla, and black cherry skin characteristics, soft tannin and medium minus acidity. This is an easy and instant crowd pleaser. Cheers!

Rich ruby red color which leads to high aromas of red fruit, cherry, earthy and toasty notes. Big cherry flavors with some oak, sweet tannins, bright acidity and lingering finish.
Each vineyard produced separately in small 1.5 ton fermenters with the use of manual punch downs of the caps two times a day during fermentation. The wines from each vineyard after fermentation were then stored in French oak barrels for a number of months before being blended and bottled. These commendations aptly describe Spindrift Cellars®, an urban downtown winery in Philomath, Oregon, owned and run by winemaker Matthew Compton and his wife, Tabitha.
After moving to Oregon at the age of 22, Matthew went to work for Oregon State University, managing a research farm for wine grapes. The New Jersey native and father of three then launched his vineyard management company, West Vine Farms; which led to the creation of Small World Wine Company, Matt’s winery and distribution company. He created his first vintage in 2003 and moved into Spindrift’s current facility a year later. Since then, Spindrift wines have garnered many awards and recognitions, including ratings of 90 and above; selection as Best Buy and Top 100 Wines of the World by Wine Spectator and Wine Enthusiast magazines; and winning Best of Show and several gold medals at Oregon wine festivals.
Matt and Tabitha have approached building their winery business with passion and intelligence. They started small, focusing on producing crisp, quality wines that display the true varietal characteristics of the grape. A great bottle of wine starts with great grapes, and Matt brings many years of experience and expertise to the husbandry of the vineyards in his care. Using “Certified Sustainable” practices he strives to produce fine wines that are sustainable from vine to bottle.
As Spindrift has grown, Matt has continued to produce wines that are fruit forward, earthy, and expressive of the Oregon vineyards that produce them. It has taken much hard work, determination and savvy, but it is also a labor of love; and the results are a full line of nationally recognized fine wines offered at consumer friendly prices.
